*St.
Clare (1193-1253) the patron saint of televison.
Clare was a member of an aristocratic Italian
family. She had met Francis of Assisi several
times as an adolescent and ran away from home
to join Francis and his small community at Portiuncula
near Assisi.
For a time, he placed her in the nearby Benedictine
convent. Later she was joined by her 15 year old
sister, Agnes, and still later by their mother
and several other women from noble families. Francis
then placed them in a house adjacent to the church
of San Damiano and named Clare the superior. She
held the office of abbess for 40 years despite
very poor health.
This marked the beginning of the cloistered Franciscan
nuns known as the Poor Clares. Clare died at age
61 on August 11, 1253 and was canonized by Pope
Alexander IV who had visited her on her deathbed,
in 1255.
